In the Heights Walking Tour

In midsummer of 2021, I saw the film "In the Heights" at the AMC Empire 25 theatre on 42nd street.

Later I found a writeup of some key filming locations in Washington Heights. The writeup is from screenrant.com.

I created my own walking tour, using some elements from screenrant.com.

I took the tour on August 25, 2021.

My Tour

The Heights is typically considered to span from 155th Street up to 192nd Street

  1. Take the A train to 190th street, then follow Google maps to the subway tunnel with the artwork where Abuelo does her reminiscing. We think it would have been more direct to take the 1 train there, not sure. In any case, it was a few minutes walk from 190th to find the tunnel. We walked the tunnel and then came out at 191st Street Station Entrance Tunnel & Elevator, New York, NY. The tunnel is filled with pretty graffiti. But we also found it to be quite dirty.

  2. The grocery and pool are next to teach other on the east side of WH. Highbridge Pool as at Amsterdam and 173rd. The bodega is at 175th Street & Audubon Avenue. We went to the bodega first. It's actually called Santo Domingo Grocery. Next door to the grocery was saw a beauty salon with a brick front. We wonder if that was the salon in the movie. Also there are some views here of the GW Bridge. We then walked to the pool, and discovered this is the pool we saw months back when we walked the High Bridge. The High Bridge spills out at the pool. The park next to the pool looked familiar, too. It was a place we visited four or five years ago for a daytime animal event.
  3. J Hood Wright Park, which is where Nina and Benny have their childhood memories near the GW Bridge, is located between West 173rd and 176th street, and between Fort Washington and Haven Avenue. We also saw the alleyways along 176th, just north of the park, where the carnival scene was shot in which Daniela tries to cheer up the neighborhood during the blackout and the heat.

  4. From there, we returned to the A train.

Little Island, The Frying Pan, The Beast, Afro-Peruvian Jazz

August 13, 2021

1. We went to "Little Island" which is a man-made island near the entrance to the High Line that has performances and activities. We did the watercolor activity, which was a hoot because neither Mike nor I can paint. It was fun.

Here's a stock photo of Little Island

2. We ate lunch out at "The Frying Pan" which is a restaurant out on a dock made from an old railroad barge

3. We took a thrilling ride on "The Beast." It's a speedboat that seats over a hundred people. It's a half-hour fast-paced ride down the Hudson to Lady Liberty and back. There was a heatwave yesterday, so we were happy to get totally soaked.

4. We returned home to change, then headed to Grundy Pier in Jersey City to hear live Latin Jazz. I love love Latin Jazz. This particular band was Afro-Peruvian jazz. They were unbelievably good.

5. We then walked home and dropped, from the full day and the heat.

Walking the new East Midtown Greenway

We were already in the city, on 5th avenue and 20th.  So we took the 6 train to 59th street and walked east and south to get to 54th stree...
